Amazon’s Fleet Expansion Milestone
Amazon has reached a significant milestone by increasing its fleet of Rivian Electric Delivery Vehicles (EDVs) to over 10,000 units, marking a doubling in size from just four months ago. This rapid expansion reflects a notable increase in production capacity at Rivian’s plant in Normal, Illinois. Previously, Amazon had announced reaching 5,000 EDVs on U.S. roads in July 2023, highlighting the swift progress since the initial rollout.
The Growing Impact of Rivian EDVs
Rivian has achieved a record production of 16,304 electric vehicles, including the R1S, R1T, and EDV models, in the third quarter of 2023 at its Illinois factory. With this growth, Amazon’s fleet now represents 10 percent of its 100,000-vehicle commitment made in 2019, despite missing the initial 2022 delivery target. The electric vans have significantly impacted operations, delivering over 260 million packages across 1,800 U.S. cities since their introduction in July 2022.
Advancements in Charging Infrastructure
To support this expanding fleet, Amazon is enhancing its charging infrastructure, having installed over 12,000 chargers across more than 100 delivery stations. The company’s commitment extends globally, with Rivian EDVs now being deployed in Germany, starting with 500 units added in July 2023. By 2030, Amazon aims to leverage its 100,000 electric vans to drastically cut carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future.
