Three automakers make the top 10 in study that rates Apple as the world’s top brand

Bigger doesn’t always mean better, anyone who’s driven a GR Yaris will tell you that. But when it comes to the car industry, the world’s biggest automaker is also the one with the greatest brand strength, according to a new study.

Toyota was ranked sixth in Interbrand’s prestigious Global Best Brands 2023 list for the second year running, nosing ahead of Mercedes, which came seventh, up one spot on 2022, and BMW, who placed ninth, climbing three positions. The only other automaker to make it into the top 20 was Tesla, which once again grabbed 12th spot.

Now in its 24th year, Interbrands’ study ranks brands according to three criteria. The first is the financial performance of the brand’s products or services, the second is the role of the brand in the customer’s purchase decision process, and the third is the strength of the brand with regards to securing the company’s future earnings. Having crunched all of that data, Interbrands comes up with a league table of the top 100 brands each year, covering not just cars, but tech, hospitality, fashion, and many more sectors.

Toyota and Mercedes ranked ahead of both Coca Cola and Nike, BMW placed ahead of McDonalds, and Tesla got the better of Disney and Louis Vuitton. But even Toyota will have to seriously up its game to trouble the top five. Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon once again grabbed the first three positions, and in the exact same position they did in last year’s study, while Google and Samsung came in fourth and fifth.

Looking at the full list of 100 brands shows up a few more automakers, though all are some way off the lead pack: Honda (27), Hyundai (32), Audi (45), Porsche (47, notably up six places), VW (50), Ford (51), Nissan (63), Ferrari (70, up five), Kia (88).

As the highly anticipated delivery event approaches, it’s worth noting that initial Cybertruck deliveries might be limited to a small number of company employees. However, despite a slow start, the Model 3’s eventual success demonstrates that initial setbacks do not necessarily preclude long-term achievement.

Honda’s new entry-level SUV is the 2023 HR-V. So it wouldn’t make sense to replace it now. But is Honda unveiling its WR-V, a small SUV that actually looks like an SUV? The 2024 WR-V will begin selling in Japan, as well as in India as the Elevate. It is a great entry-level SUV, so the question is, “Could it be coming to the U.S. to replace the current HR-V?”

The WR-V is similar in some ways to the HR-V but with more swagger. The Elevate/WR-V was first shown in India in June. With the announcement that it will sell in Japan next year, Honda begins the slow rollout of its smallest SUV. Right now, the Honda HR-V is its least-expensive model, with an MSRP of $23,800.

Do the Honda WR-V and HR-V share a platform?

The WR-V uses the Honda Global Small Car platform, so it is an HR-V underneath. That also underpins the Civic. But the styling is pretty far removed from the HR-V. It is chunkier, with a taller front end, and side windows stopping at the C-pillars.

In fact, the hood almost has no slope, jettisoning almost straight out from the windshield. The round wheel openings are gone. Instead, Honda sought more squareness, tying into taller rockers with satin inserts.

What engines and transmissions will the WR-V have?

Also taken from the HR-V is the WR-V’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, according to Australia’s CarsGuide. With 120 hp and 106 lb-ft, two transmissions will be available. More likely, should it come here, it would be a turbocharged version of the 1.5 with 180 hp, and a hybrid should be around the corner.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a six-speed manual livens the WR-H up. But we wouldn’t see the six-speed. However, the new 2023 HR-V does offer all-wheel drive. Previous HR-V SUVs had a bit of torque punch but didn’t feel like a Civic. This new HR-V is kicking things up a notch or two.

How likely is it that the WR-V comes here?

So, the dilemma is that Honda has a new small SUV in the States. While in Japan and India, it offers something more aggressive with the same platform, featuring the preferred Land Rover-like proportions. Will America get the WR-V as an HR-V, or does it have something else up its sleeve? It is too soon to know.

But it is always enticing to find that domestic automakers (and Honda is domestic with three factories in Ohio, three in North Carolina, and one each in Indiana, Arizona, and South Carolina) have something different from what is available here. We expect that by 2026 or so, when an HR-V refresh is in store, we might see a version of the WR-V. But then again…

Why Don’t NASCAR Races Ever Turn Right?

NASCAR has plenty of tradition baked into the motorsport series, and perhaps the most obvious among new or casual fans is that cars seem to invariably turn left in a counter-clockwise motion, begging the question as to why. Is it attributable to car design, tradition, or something else? Why don’t NASCAR races ever have cars turning right?

Are NASCAR race cars able to turn right?

Despite most tracks requiring drivers to only turn left during a race on “oval” tracks, NASCAR cars absolutely have the ability to turn right just as much as left. There is nothing in NASCAR car design that limits right turns. To note, cars are tuned and “set up” for left turns on tracks that exclusively require left turns – which aids in the car’s handling during left turns by controlling lateral forces – but they still can turn in either direction.

In fact, right turns in NASCAR have become more prominent in recent years, with more “road courses,” including both left and right turns, being added to the schedule. For instance, the 2008 schedule for NASCAR’s top division included just two road courses. Fifteen years later, the 2023 Cup Series schedule included six road course races.

An often-heard criticism of NASCAR is that races are just cars “turning left all day,” but road course races have been fielded since the sport’s earliest days. Just the second NASCAR-sanctioned race in the sport’s history was run on a road course in 1949.

So, NASCAR’s history on road courses underscores that NASCAR has always “turned right” as well as left, just not as often.

Oval shapes and safety determine left turns

So, why does NASCAR turn left on oval tracks instead of right? The reason is down to a few fairly simplistic factors, most notably, tradition.

According to ESPN, NASCAR historian Buz McKim notes that horse races in the United States were run counter-clockwise in defiance to the British running some such races in a clockwise motion. NASCAR simply kept the tradition of turning left on oval courses a tradition, he states.

Allan Carter with the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame notes the tradition of counter-clockwise competition in the U.S. goes beyond motorsports, noting baseball, horse racing, and track and field are all organized in a counter-clockwise motion.

Driver safety is also another factor. NASCAR drivers sit on the left side of the car, which keeps them further away from safety barriers in a crash. If drivers were positioned on the right side of the vehicle, it stands to reason most NASCAR ovals would be run clockwise.

Do European race car drivers turn clockwise?

The latter point regarding driver safety begs another question. Since drivers sit on the right side of the car in Europe, do race car drivers from that area of the world turn clockwise, keeping them further away from safety barriers?

According to The German Way, most European racing series courses run in a clockwise direction. Thus, drivers are often positioned on the right side of the car.

However, this is not an absolute. For instance, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series has drivers sitting on the left side of the car, although some tracks, including Brands Hatch in Britain, are run clockwise.
