Flood-Related Crash and Emergency Response
On Monday, Chester experienced a severe traffic incident when a flooded road led to a head-on collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer. The SUV driver hydroplaned on a water-covered section of Route 10, crashing into the truck, which then hit a telephone pole. Emergency crews worked for over two hours to rescue the truck driver, who was later hospitalized.
Ongoing Flooding Challenges
Chester, known for its frequent flooding due to the convergence of four branches of the Williams River, faces continuous challenges with water overflow. Although Monday’s flooding was not as severe as past events, it led to road closures and stranded residents. Chester’s swift-water rescue team remains on high alert to manage any further emergencies and support affected residents.
Community Impact and Response
With several roads impassable and multiple homes inaccessible, Chester Town Manager Julie Hance noted that officials are in contact with stranded residents, preparing to assist if water levels remain high for more than 24 hours. Past flooding incidents, including those from Tropical Storm Irene and July’s severe impacts, have shaped the town’s preparedness strategies. First responders continue to monitor the situation closely, ready to implement additional safety measures if needed.
