Unveiling Acura’s Most Potent SUV

Acura has introduced its most powerful SUV to date with the ZDX Type S, boasting nearly 500 horsepower and an impressive 544 pound-feet of torque. This electric vehicle not only surpasses the hybrid NSX Type S supercar in torque but also outshines luxury EVs like the Mercedes-Benz EQE 500 and Audi SQ8 e-tron in terms of horsepower. Built in collaboration with General Motors, the ZDX Type S is a testament to Acura’s commitment to electrification.

Innovative Collaboration and Design

The ZDX, developed alongside GM engineers, draws power from a 102-kWh GM Ultium battery pack, sharing components with Cadillac’s Lyriq and Chevrolet’s Blazer EV. The vehicle’s exterior dimensions mirror those of the Lyriq, highlighting the influence of GM’s design and engineering expertise. This partnership between an American and a Japanese automaker has resulted in a unique blend of innovation and performance, evident in the ZDX’s capabilities.

Performance and Range Options

The ZDX offers both single and dual-motor configurations, with the rear-wheel-drive model delivering an EPA-estimated range of 313 miles. A DC fast-charging station can add up to 81 miles of range in about 10 minutes, reaching 80 percent charge in just over 40 minutes. While the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version offers slightly less range, the Type S model achieves 278 miles before needing a recharge, balancing power and efficiency.

Compared to rivals from Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis, the ZDX may take longer to charge but compensates with greater range and power. The vehicle is also equipped with an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, marking Acura’s first use of this high-end sound system, commonly found in luxury brands like Lamborghini and Bentley. This addition ensures a premium in-car experience, perfect for enjoying tracks like Eddie Grant’s “Electric Avenue.”

Leveraging GM’s Expertise for Economies of Scale

GM has supplied the battery, frame, suspension, chassis, powertrain, and electrical architecture for the ZDX, while Acura focused on the design and build above the chassis. This collaboration has allowed both automakers to leverage their strengths, providing a cost-effective and efficient production process. Notably, the ZDX retains GM’s one-pedal driving feature, praised by Acura’s development team for its seamless functionality.

Future Prospects and Technological Innovations

Looking ahead, Acura’s first foray into the EV market with the ZDX sets a strong foundation, though the brand has no plans to return to hybrid technology. Instead, Acura aims to explore solid-state batteries and hydrogen-powered vehicles in collaboration with GM. These advancements signify Acura’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation and sustainability.

The ZDX qualifies for the federal $7,500 tax credit, bringing its starting price to $57,500. With additional options like the striking Double Apex Blue Pearl color, Acura’s EV offers a blend of performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology that positions it as a formidable contender in the electric vehicle market.
