SUV crashes into Chicago area Fannie May candy store

An SUV crashed through the front of a Fannie May candy shop Tuesday afternoon in north suburban Lincolnwood.

The crash caused significant damage to a brick wall, cabinets, and a counter after the SUV wound up more than halfway inside the building at 7001 Lincoln Ave., leaving behind a large pile of rubble.

Lincolnwood Fire Department Battalion Chief Dean Friedlund said an employee was inside the store at the time of the crash.

“She had moved to the other end of the building, and she was not hurt, luckily. We’re glad that she moved to the other side of the building,” Friedlund said.

No one was injured in the crash. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, or whether the driver was ticketed.

Friedlund said the building will need extensive repairs.

Good News: Ontario Wants to Ban Car Thieves From Driving Altogether

As the war between Toronto-area car thieves and, well, everybody else rages on, legislators are proposing a penalty in the hopes of curbing the problem: potentially permanent driving bans.

The government of Ontario is introducing legislation that, if passed, would see people convicted of car theft have their driver’s licenses suspended as a deterrent. According to a news release, the proposed three-stage punishment is as follows: the first offense would result in a 10-year license suspension, a second offense would earn a 15-year suspension, and a third offense would result in a lifetime driving ban. The federal mandatory minimum prison sentence for a third car theft offense in Canada is six months.

“Car theft is a cowardly and often violent crime that can traumatize victims and communities who experience it,” said Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria. “…our government is sending a clear message to those who commit these crimes and using every tool in our toolbox to keep them off our streets.”

However, the release points out that the suspensions would only apply to auto theft convictions where “the court found that aggravating factors were involved in the commission of the offense, such as violence, use of a weapon, use of force, threat, or pursuit of financial gain.” So, I guess carjackers who peacefully pick locks purely to go on joyrides are off the hook.

Other ways to combat car theft brought up by Ontario leaders include crackdowns at the ports where stolen vehicles are often exported for profit, with Brampton mayor Patrick Brown saying, “We urgently need our federal partners to immediately implement scanners at our ports so we can plug the hole in the bucket of auto thefts in Canada.”

Per the province, a vehicle is stolen in Ontario every 14 minutes while the city of Toronto saw violent carjackings spike by 78% since 2021.

Danbury Emergency Crews Rescue Motorist Trapped In SUV After Crash

Emergency crews had to extricate a driver trapped inside an SUV following a crash on South King Street Tuesday.

Danbury Emergency Services was notified of the collision with the utility pole at 1:10 p.m.

After hitting the pole, the SUV rolled over, trapping the driver, according to the Danbury Fire Department.

Police closed South King Street for about 90 minutes, while members of the Danbury Fire Department extricated the driver. Danbury EMS took one victim to the hospital with minor injuries.

With a 100% Tariff In Effect, Will We Ever See Chinese Electric Cars on American Roads?

Early adopters of EV technology had a common gripe beyond range anxiety and charging times: price. That is, in the United States. Chinese electric cars are cheaper and many American motorists would like the opportunity to buy a budget-friendly BYD EV. However, the latest tariffs make importing Chinese EVs all but impossible. While it might be a win for American brands, it harms the American consumer.

Just shy of 28%. That’s the sort of tariff Chinese-built EVs had to contend with prior to the latest developments. It was more than enough to disincentivize Chinese electric car efforts for the U.S. market. However, the latest tariffs are more than steep, they’re prohibitive. U.S. President Joe Biden and his administration levied 100% tariffs on new Chinese EVs and solar cells. According to the BBC, the administration asserts that the measures are “a response to unfair policies and intended to protect US jobs.”

Like the previous round of tariffs, the maneuver makes it nearly impossible to import Chinese-built EVs. While it’s understandable that the U.S. Government would want to protect the country’s North American clean vehicle initiatives from cheap Chinese EVs, it does impact the American consumer negatively. Currently, affordable Chinese electric cars ship worldwide, giving consumers access to affordable electric vehicle technology, especially those urban commuters.

Of course, a solution would be cheaper US-made EVs from domestic marques like Tesla, Ford, and GM. Tragically, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, one of the cheapest new EVs on the American market, started at around $27,495 for 2023. Conversely, the BYD Seagull, a compact Chinese electric car, sells for around USD 12,000 in the domestic Chinese market.

It’s not just Chinese EVs, either. The U.S. Government recently overhauled the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) standards for which EVs qualify for the federal clean vehicle tax credit. According to the DOE, all qualifying electric vehicles must “undergo final assembly in North America.” As such, several European models will no longer qualify for the $7,500 incentive.

However, there is one loophole shoppers can exploit when it comes to foreign EVs. The IRS exempts foreign-built EVs from the restrictions as long as drivers lease rather than buy. Still, buyers who want up to $7,500 in federal credits on a new EV will have to opt for a North American-finished EV like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Brentwood man charged with stealing SUV with child inside

A Brentwood man has been formally charged days after his arrest for stealing an SUV while a toddler was in the vehicle.

According to the Brentwood Police Department’s probable cause statement, the SUV was stolen from a Mobil gas station at 2120 S. Brentwood Boulevard just after 4 a.m. on May 9. A two-year-old child was inside. The child was found safe half an hour later on the front lawn of a home in the 8400 block of University Drive in Clayton.

The mother told police she left the SUV running to make a purchase inside the gas station. She returned to discover her vehicle had been stolen.

Gas station security video showed a man wearing a mask and gloves taking the SUV. Investigators also saw neighborhood surveillance showing the suspect abandoning the child and driving away.

The stolen SUV was found in the parking lot of a Super 8 hotel in Pevely. Security video purportedly shows the same person driving the SUV as seen at the gas station and in the Clayton neighborhood.

On May 10, police arrested Stephen A. Dunn in connection with the crimes.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Dunn child kidnapping, stealing a motor vehicle, and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Dunn remains jailed on a $300,000 cash-only bond. He’s due in court on May 20 for a bond reduction hearing.
