Senate Bill to Abolish EV Tax Credits Faces Strong Opposition from Car-Manufacturing States

A new Senate proposal aims to eliminate federal tax credits for electric vehicles (EVs), yet it has drawn scant support from states actively involved in car manufacturing. This bill, introduced by Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, seeks to scrap the $7,500 EV tax credit and other federal incentives. Surprisingly, states where electric vehicles are produced, such as Texas and Tennessee, have not backed this bill, highlighting a stark disconnect between the legislation and the industries it affects.

Tax incentives for EVs have long been a political football, with critics arguing they disproportionately benefit wealthier Americans and cost taxpayers billions. However, these credits have played a crucial role in boosting local EV production and creating jobs. As companies ramp up domestic battery and vehicle manufacturing, the proposed bill could undermine these gains and disadvantage U.S. manufacturers competing against international rivals.

Mercedes Alabama

The bill’s sponsors are primarily from states with minimal or no car manufacturing, contrasting sharply with the interests of regions like South Carolina and Alabama, where major automakers produce electric vehicles. This oversight suggests the bill might disregard the significant economic impact of the EV sector on local economies and job markets. With the EV industry driving substantial growth and job creation in manufacturing states, the bill’s potential impact underscores a deeper debate over its true beneficiaries and detractors.

The Dyrt Study Reveals SUVs are Most Popular Among Campers Despite Preference for Trucks

According to The Dyrt’s 2024 Camping Report, while 45% of campers view trucks as the ideal vehicle for camping, SUVs are the most commonly owned vehicle among campers. The study, sponsored by the All-New Toyota Tacoma, highlights a surprising trend: although trucks lead in popularity, 56% of respondents own SUVs compared to 48.8% who own trucks. This paradox underscores SUVs’ widespread appeal despite the functional advantages of trucks for camping.

The report also sheds light on the growing trend of overlanding, which doubled in popularity in 2023 and is now a primary camping style for 3.4% of campers. This adventurous form of camping combines off-roading with camping, making it a perfect fit for trucks. Interestingly, households with higher incomes are more inclined towards overlanding and truck camping, reflecting a correlation between financial capacity and the pursuit of more rugged outdoor experiences.

Charles P., a dedicated camper from Washington, shared his transition from SUVs to trucks, citing the versatility and organization of his Toyota Tacoma’s slide-in camper as pivotal to his new camping style. With a majority of campers planning to buy a new vehicle in the next five years, the demand for versatile and adventurous camping options is evident. Here’s How Game Wardens Used Airboats to Rescue 600 Houstonians Stranded by Floodwater

Mother nature can be cruel, but Texas Game Wardens were there to rescue hundreds of folks last weekend.

Where I come from, the game wardens are responsible for all state police duties that happen “off road.” In Texas right now, that includes rescue efforts when the road is fully submerged.

Here’s the scoop. During the first week/weekend in May, Texas and Oklahoma were rocked by tornados and heavy storms. Some weather stations recorded 23 inches of rainfall. Disaster status was declared in 91 counties.

Houston was hit by some of the worst flooding. Even after the rainfall subsided, authorities were forced to release overflow from nearby dams, so in some places water levels continued to rise. Hundreds of residents, even of houses built on stilts, ended up trapped by the water.

In some cases, such as a 12-hour-old newborn in need of a hospital with an intensive care unit, authorities used a helicopter to complete a rescue. But with hundreds of Houstonians stranded, authorities needed another way. Enter the Game Wardens and their airboats.

Why airboats? Regular boats use a propeller submerged in the water to move. But this requires deep, clear water. The floodwater covering Houston neighborhoods was often about waist deep. So shallow enough to trap a boat. In addition, debris could foul up a propellor. Downed power lines could be a deadly obstacle for a prop boat.

Airboats are propelled by huge fans at the back of the craft. They can easily navigate shallow water with a ton of obstacles, such as swamps. So the Texas Game Wardens trucked their airboats to Houston and began going house-to-house. I’ll bet anyone stranded by floodwaters was happy to hear those fans.

There is no number for airboat-specific rescues. But authorities say over 600 Texans have been rescued from their homes or cars thus far.

This was far from the Game Wardens’ first rodeo. Houston flooded so badly in 2017, that government personnel rescued 60,000 trapped residents.

We Take Three OG SUVs Out for the Strangest Performance Test Ever! Go Big Ep. 3

Who built the best full-size SUV in the 1990s or ever? This is one of the main purposes of this “Go Big… Again!” video series. We purchased three iconic SUVs to put them through a series of challenges. Roman is driving a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser 80-series. Nathan is driving a 1997 Ford Expedition. I am in a 1998 Chevy Tahoe. It doesn’t get much better than this for SUVs from the 90s. This episode is all about performance! We are having fun with a 0-60 MPH test, a 60-0 mpg braking test, and a very strange Tumbleweed Ranch off-road speed challenge that includes fishing. No fish were harmed in the making of this video.

0-60 MPH Performance

Good acceleration is important for any truck or SUV. It provides safety and peace of mind when merging onto a highway. It give the owner bragging rights. Unfortunately, Roman is unable to brag about his Land Cruiser’s speed and acceleration. The 80-Series was known and loved for many things, but quick acceleration was not one of them. The Ford and the Chevy are equipped with large V8 engines, but how quick are they after all these years?

Here are the specs…

1995 Toyota LC 1997 Ford Expedition 1998 Chevy Tahoe
Engine 4.5L I6 5.4L V8 5.7L V8
Power 212 hp @ 4,600 230 hp @ 4,250 255 hp @ 4,600
Torque 275 lb-ft @ 3,200 325 lb-ft @ 3,000 330 lb-ft @ 2,800
Transmission 4-speed auto 4-speed auto 4-speed auto
Rear Axle 4.11 3.73 3.73
Max Towing 5,000 lbs 8,000 lbs 6,500 lbs

Without giving everything away, let’s just say that the Land Cruiser is the slowest by a large margin. Yes, it does have a small OME suspension lift and larger-than-stock all-terrain tires. This does not help its speed or performance. The Expedition is the second quickest, and the Tahoe takes the acceleration win by a healthy margin (of around 1 second). Yes! There is no replacement for displacement!

60-0 Braking Test Surprise

We didn’t know what to expect from the braking test comparison, but we knew these SUVs are heavy and not known for stellar stopping power. This is of course a very important safety measure of any vehicle, so let’s see how they do.

Roman’s Land Cruiser surprises all of us with the shortest stopping distance of the three. The 80-Series is equipped with disk brakes front and rear. Nice! The Chevy Tahoe is second best (it has rear drum brakes), and Nathan’s Expedition takes the longest distance to stop (not helped by its largest size and weight).

Tumbleweed Ranch Speed Challenge & Fishing

The competition is still very tight as we go into the final stretch. This off-road speed challenges requires us to drive our SUVs down into Andre’s Pit via the log course, climb out via the trenches, reach the pond, try to catch a fish, and return to the start/finish line. It’s a timed event, and the person who catches the largest fish could get up to 3 bonus points. It’s anyones game now.

Nathan goes first. He is a speed demon, but he is unable to catch any fish. I go next. The Tahoe does not have as much ground clearance, so I need to exercise some caution over off-road obstacles. I also do not catch any fish, and my time is just a little ahead of Nathan’s. Roman hauls his Land Cruiser through the course, and he catches a fish. It’s a very big fish, but he gets bonus points nonetheless.

In the end, Roman edges out an overall win due to his fishing skills. I demand a recount! The Chevy Tahoe performed very well in all three episodes. It may not be the most capable off-road, but it’s the most fuel efficient, the quickest, and (arguably) the most comfortable.

Magna Lays Off 500 Workers as Fisker Ocean Production Stalls: Rivian and Apple Car Rumors Heat Up

Fisker faces significant setbacks as its production lines halt, leading to substantial job losses at Magna. The auto industry’s cooling has forced Magna to lay off 500 workers, following a dramatic reduction in Fisker Ocean SUV output. Magna, once set to produce up to 23,000 units annually, will now struggle with a 25% cut in production capacity due to the ongoing pause.

Before we get to Fisker, let’s talk Apple. And Rivian.

Meanwhile, intriguing whispers surround the potential revival of Apple’s car project, with Rivian emerging as a key player in these discussions. Although details remain speculative, reports suggest Apple might partner with Rivian to bring its long-awaited vehicle to market. This potential alliance could be a game-changer for both companies, offering Rivian crucial financial support and allowing Apple to quickly enter the automotive space.

Tesla Autopilot (Vision-Based)

In another development, the NHTSA has demanded comprehensive data from Tesla regarding the effectiveness of its recent over-the-air recall. This scrutiny highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and reliability of Tesla’s Autopilot system. The results of this investigation could significantly impact Tesla’s reputation and regulatory standing, as the company works to address the issues identified by the NHTSA.

A $175,000 CyberTrailer Camper That Can Charge Your EV Is In The Works

Made by California-based Living Vehicle, the Cybertruck-inspired trailer will be ready next year.

Just when we thought all the Cybertruck-inspired frenzy was over, California-based Living Vehicle is here to prove us wrong.

After the Tesla-branded CyberBeer, Cyberwhistle, Cyberquad and Cybertent (previously known as the Basecamp tent), it’s time for the CyberTrailer to shine under the spotlight. Only this time, it’s not a Tesla product.

Cyber everything

The popularity of the Tesla Cybertruck prompted the launch of several Cybertruck-inspired products. The Cyberwhistle, Cyberquad and Cyberbeer were of Tesla’s own making, and now it’s time for a third party to join in on the action with the CyberTrailer off-grid camper.

As its name suggests, it’s a trailer that somewhat resembles the shape of the controversial Cybertruck pickup. Made by California-based luxury camper specialist Living Vehicle, the CyberTrailer isn’t quite ready for prime time, with the company behind it claiming deliveries will start next year, but it does promise a completely off-grid camping experience.

Top Videos:

While there are no interior photos of the angular camper trailer yet, we can expect above-average amenities, considering Living Vehicle made a name for itself after building ultra-luxury campers that offer things like a water generation system, fold-down patios and top-spec solar panel arrays.

However, while the company’s past models could be configured in such a way that the bill exceeded $600,000, the upcoming CyberTrailer is much more affordable. However, with a starting price of $175,000, we wouldn’t necessarily call it cheap.

According to the Californian builder’s website, the Cybertruck-inspired camper will be entirely solar-powered. It will feature “unlimited water from air creation and recycling,” eliminating the need for utility connections and even RV parks.

A folding patio and gear-hauler ramp will also be included, although we don’t know if they will come as standard or as part of an optional package that costs extra, and an Apple iPad tablet will be the gateway to control most if not all, of the camper trailer’s features.

Besides the Tesla Cybertruck, the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T and R1S will also be capable of towing the CyberTrailer, according to the company, but a weight rating doesn’t exist yet. For context, the F-150 Lightning can tow up to 10,000 pounds, while the R1T and Cybertruck can haul up to 11,000 lbs each.

Living Vehicle CyberTrailer off-grid camper trailer

As with other off-grid campers made by Living Vehicle, the CyberTrailer will also be able to export power from its integrated battery to recharge the EV that’s towing it, although–again–we don’t know specifics. Last year’s HD and LT campers had batteries that could store up to 72 kilowatt-hours of energy and provide Level 1 EV charging. They could also run a mini-split HVAC system.

Living Vehicle is currently taking pre-orders which require a $100 deposit that’s fully refundable if you change your mind. The company says that 50% of the production is already sold out, but it didn’t mention how many units it plans on making.

We’ll know more about the Cybertruck-inspired CyberTrailer as it gets closer to production. In the meantime, let us know in the comments if this sort of thing tickles your fancy.
