Major Collision in South Bend Leads to Hospitalizations and Arrest

In a distressing turn of events, a significant collision occurred at the intersection of Ewing Avenue and Marine Street in South Bend, resulting in serious injuries and multiple hospitalizations. The incident, which took place around 3:40 p.m. on May 15, involved an SUV carrying three passengers and a sedan operated by a solo driver. South Bend Police quickly responded to the scene to assess the situation and assist the injured.

Details of Injuries and Response

Upon arrival, authorities discovered that two individuals from the SUV, including a young child, sustained serious injuries and required immediate hospital transport. Fortunately, a baby and another passenger in the SUV were found to be unharmed. The driver of the sedan also suffered multiple injuries and was transported to the hospital. All injuries, while serious, are not considered life-threatening according to the police.

Investigation and Traffic Impact

Initial findings from the South Bend Police suggest that impairment might have been a factor contributing to the crash. The driver of the sedan, currently receiving medical care, has been taken into police custody and is expected to be moved to St. Joseph County Jail following his hospital discharge. Traffic on Ewing Avenue between Miami and Leer Streets was blocked for several hours to facilitate the investigation but has since reopened, easing local disruptions.
