Madison police arrest man who crashes into parked car, good Samaritan’s vehicle stolen

A 31-year-old man was arrested after he crashed a rental box truck into a parked car while under the influence, according to the Madison Police Department.

Spokesperson Stephanie Fryer said officers were dispatched to Waunona Woods Court around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

She said strangers stopped to help after seeing the crash, and while helping the driver, a passenger in the truck is believed to have stolen the good Samaritan’s vehicle.

First responders revived the driver with Narcan.

Fryer said Roy L. Wade Jr. was arrested for second offense OWI, possession of cocaine and possession of fentanyl.

The stolen vehicle hasn’t been found.

Peoria driver suffers minor injuries after flipping SUV

An early morning wreck on Thursday left one driver with minor injuries.

Peoria Police Public Relations Officer Semone Roth confirms that a blue Chevy Equinox flipped on its top at approximately 7:23 a.m. near Jefferson Avenue and Kumpf Boulevard.

The driver was able to pull themselves from the car before being transported to a local hospital.

Both vehicles involved in the wreck were towed.

The cause of the crash is unknown as of 11:19 a.m.

Toyota’s Next Move: Trademark Filed For Lexus TZ Three-Row Electric SUV

The Lexus TZ might be the electric alternative to the recently unveiled TX.

Toyota might be developing a new Lexus-branded three-row electric SUV. The Japanese carmaker filed four new trademark applications with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPA) on July 19, 2023, for different versions of the Lexus TZ, as per the Lexus RX Owners forum.

The brand is hoping to trademark four names, including TZ450e and TZ550e. If you’re familiar with Toyota and Lexus nomenclature, you’d know that ‘Z’ connotes BEVs. Toyota has the bZ4X, while Lexus has the RZ 450e, the electric alternative to the RX.

The brand recently introduced the 2024 Lexus TX, a swanky gas-powered three-row SUV that shares its GA-K platform with the Toyota Grand Highlander and slots between the RX and the GX. The new TZ could be the TX’s pure electric counterpart.

If this turns out to be true, it will be clear that the brand is maintaining an alphanumerical naming consistency for its upcoming electrified models.

Details are limited to the trademark names, but we can expect the TZ to adhere to the RZ’s design language. It might feature the aerodynamic spindle body and sport elements like the illuminated Lexus emblem and a full-width taillamp.

So far, Toyota and Lexus have used the e-TNGA platform for their electric SUVs, but the TZ could be based on a dedicated EV platform. The e-TNGA shares several components with the ICE-specific TNGA and hence is not as cost-effective as dedicated EV platforms.

The automaker has plans to manufacture a three-row Toyota electric SUV at its Georgetown Assembly Plant in Kentucky from 2025, and the TZ is likely to be its more premium Lexus iteration. Even though the trademark filings were done with EUIPA, it’s possible that the Lexus electric SUV would be offered in the US as well.

The SUVs could be powered by US-assembled batteries, as the automaker has ramped up investments in its under-construction battery manufacturing site in North Carolina. The company will reportedly infuse $5.9 billion to manufacture HEV and BEV batteries at the North Carolina site.

The brand is still lagging behind competitors when it comes to scaling up BEV production and generating appeal among buyers. Its H1 2023 US BEV sales increased but they weren’t spectacular by any measure. The group sold 20,710 plug-in vehicles (BEVs and hybrids) in the first six months of 2023, of which 3,415 were Lexus models and 17,295 were Toyota cars.

South Jersey’s Atco Dragway Suddenly Closes After 63 Years

Another drag strip has abruptly closed. Atco Dragway in South Jersey ended a weekend event, only to announce the next day it is closing for good. What’s going on?

It has happened again. After the final NHRA national drag race at Bandimere Raceway in Denver last week comes news that South Jersey’s Atco Dragway in Camden County is closing immediately after 63 years of racing. Tracks seem to be falling like flies at this point. Here is yet, another famous drag strip that will be no more. But its closing leaves many shocked as there was no hint it would happen.

Yesterday Atco Dragway posted this announcement on its website and Facebook page. “Effective immediately: Atco Dragway is permanently closed. Thank you for your valued business and support over the last 63 years.” That’s it. This is all we know.

CBS 3 in Philidelphia approached a man who said he was the owner but asked the crew to leave the premises without commenting on the closing. So it is still a big mystery why the legendary track would just suddenly close. It just held a regional event at the track this past weekend. And it was holding another one this coming weekend. That, obviously, won’t be happening.

Atco Dragway began quarter-mile racing back in 1960. Since then, it has been one of the go-to tracks for drag racers in the East. It fed off of enthusiasts locally from New Jersey to Philly, New York, Maryland, and Delaware. “We will not be open from this point on,” it said on Facebook. “The remainder of our schedule for 2023 will be canceled. Thank you all for your patronage and memories over the years.”

What is replacing Atco Dragway?

There was a full schedule of events through November. Many told ABC Philadelphia that nothing indicated this would happen. “This whole thing was kept hush-hush and quiet. And we don’t know what’s going on,” said Marc from Atco, New Jersey.

Bordering the drag strip are the New Jersey Pinelands. When contacted, an official said there had not been any applications for development at the former track. There was talk that an auto insurance auction company might purchase the property. But 42Freeway says the company found another location for its auctions.

How many drag strips have closed recently?

This follows the end of drag racing at nearby Englishtown Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in 2018. But plenty of other famous strips like Englishtown have seen their end in recent years. Denver’s Bandimere Raceway just held its last NHRA national event last week.

Then there is Houston Raceway Park, Wild Horse Raceway in Arizona, and Auto Club Dragway in Southern California, to mention only a few. And while there are rumors that there is a substitute parcel for Bandimere, many racers don’t hold out hope it will ever happen.

Is there any place left to drag race in Philadelphia?

This comes at a time when street racing and takeovers have become an epidemic. With no place to face off in grudge matches or otherwise blow off steam in a safe environment, this is what happens. People wanting to race take it into their own hands, sometimes with disastrous results.

The good news is the famous Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, is still scheduling events. Located in a pocket between Allentown, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Lancaster, it holds the Pepboys NHRA Nationals in September. We hope it continues for decades to come.
