Are Extended Car Warranties Worth It?

Purchasing a vehicle is a monumental achievement. However, people who buy cars have quite a bit to consider. Of these things, whether extended warranties are worth it for your car is among the biggest. Of course, some owners go for coverage from the manufacturer whereas others use car warranty companies. Still, many drivers wonder if getting an extended warranty for their car is worth it.

Extended car warranties aren’t cheap and most people don’t use them

One of the reasons some people don’t buy extended car warranties is their price. Naturally, the amount of coverage needed for a vehicle isn’t going to be cheap, but this can be off putting for many. According to Market Watch, the average cost of an extended car warranty from a dealer or third party company ranges from $1,152 and $6,192. Of course, this depends on the vehicle and type of plan.

Consumer Affairs reports that about 37% of car owners have extended warranties. However, the same survey found that only 10% of people with these types of car warranties used them. It should be noted that other surveys had more favorable results for getting an extended car warranty from companies or manufacturers.

Extended car warranties from companies and manufacturers have pros and cons

There are many reasons why some people decide to get extended car warranties and there is also justification for those who elect not to. In many ways, it does come down to your budget because as mentioned, extended car warranties are not cheap. Drivers also have to be aware that third party extended warranty companies can also have other fees. Still, prices aren’t the only pros or cons.

Pros of getting an extended warranty

We love our cars, but they can be unpredictable. This means that a person could go out and buy a vehicle that’s won all sorts of reliability awards and still have issues that arise after the standard warranty ends. Because of this, car warranties offer peace of mind. This is even the case if you never use the extended warranty.

This is especially true for drivers who may not have the income needed for a significant repair but can afford the cost of extended vehicle coverage. Still, people should weight their options against their needs for extended car warranties

Cons of getting extended coverage

There are also many downsides to these types of warranties. Many of them have to do with the cost, but there are also others that potential buyers should be aware of. For starters, these warranties don’t cover all damages, and protection for your car from companies rather than the manufacturer is even worse for this as their contacts exist to protect them.

For example, this expensive coverage may not include the cost of a rental car. This is important because your vehicle could be in the shop for an extended timeframe. Naturally, they don’t pay for repairs resulting from car accidents, theft, or natural disasters. Additionally, there are many reasons third party car warranty companies could void your coverage. Plus, they don’t last forever.

Overall, the decision to get these types of car warranties depends on the driver in question. If you have the money for an extended warranty and believe it could come in handy, many people would agree with you. Additionally, if a major repair would be impossible on your budget but you can afford coverage, it could also be a great idea. Still, many people elect not to get extended coverage.

Review: What car has good head and leg room and won’t tempt thieves?

The new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe has a more boxy look than before, but is actually more aerodynamic.

I bought the 2020 Ford Escape Titanium hybrid as a new car. It was a bit more than I wanted but, scarcity was looming and I loved the green colour. It turns out that it does not suit my driving habits. I don’t drive enough in the winter so it constantly goes into battery saver mode.

I need a reliable car to drive from Ottawa to Toronto and to Saint John. I have an adult son and an adult nephew who live with me, so head and leg room are important. And with the long drives that I do on an almost monthly basis, a full electric vehicle is not on my radar yet. I am considering a plug-in hybrid, but I’m not sure whether I will have the same issues. I also don’t want a car that will tempt car thieves as I don’t have a garage. What do you recommend? – Maureen

Petrina Gentile: It’s sad that we have to consider car thieves in our vehicle purchases these days. But it’s unfortunately a reality. So, is it safe to say we can take Honda and Toyota off the list, if she doesn’t want a car that will tempt thieves?

Mark Richardson: It’s a bit of a crap shoot for which makers and which models are most vulnerable. Kia, for example, has a poor reputation for its access codes being easily hacked, but only certain models, like the Stinger. It depends what technology the thief has on hand this week.

Gentile: But it’s not only about the technology – it’s about what cars are in demand in other global markets. Kia isn’t, but Honda and Toyota vehicles are prized in other markets, like Africa.

Richardson: Again, it depends on the model. It doesn’t necessarily pay to ship a Toyota Corolla across the ocean, but it definitely pays to send a Land Cruiser there. Thieves tend to steal larger or luxurious models for export-to-order, and smaller models for local sale or joy rides.

Gentile: Maureen is considering a plug-in hybrid. But one of my favourites, the Toyota RAV4 Prime, might be a target for thieves. Wouldn’t you agree?

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime offers 68 kilometres of electric range, but is hard to buy outside Quebec and B.C.Mark Richardson/The Globe and Mail

Richardson: It might be. It’s nearly impossible to buy a new one legitimately. Mind you, my brother-in-law just bought a two-year-old RAV4 Prime in Halifax on the first day he went looking for one. It had 60,000 kilometres and he paid less than $50,000, fully loaded. So it’s not unobtainable. He’s bought a steering-wheel club for it to help him keep it.

Gentile: That’s a smart idea.

Richardson: The challenge here is that I’d normally recommend the Ford Escape Hybrid to Maureen as a smart buy, but she says it’s too much for her. Perhaps she should just trade it in for a regular Escape. Hybrids don’t save her much fuel on those long highway drives.

Gentile: I’m not a fan of the Escape – I don’t really like the ride and handling. I find it lacklustre and the transmission isn’t the smoothest.

Richardson: But you’d agree that if she doesn’t drive much in the winter and she doesn’t want an electric car, then she’ll be better off with a conventionally powered vehicle? Hybrids generally have smaller 12-volt batteries that don’t handle cold weather and long storage so well. Check out the online forums and you’ll see it’s an issue for Fords that sit parked for days at a time in the winter.

Gentile: I agree. And it’s not just an issue for Fords. Other manufacturers have similar issues in the cold.

Richardson: She needs size for her passengers and she shouldn’t be too concerned about fuel consumption because she doesn’t drive much for half the year. How about a Volkswagen Tiguan or Atlas?

Gentile: I don’t think she needs an Atlas. It’s too big and can be cumbersome to drive and park in congested areas because of its size. But the Tiguan would do the trick.

Richardson: I’ve heard stories of glitchy software in the Atlas that can be frustrating to use, but the Tiguan has a good reputation. The Chevrolet Equinox has also been around for a while, and it’s not high on the list for thieves.

Gentile: That’s true. It also blends in on the road. But it does get redone for 2025 so she might want to wait and see what’s in store for the new model. What about Hyundai?

Richardson: The new Santa Fe has more space in both rows for passengers. I’m almost six-feet tall and had no issues for head or leg room in any of the seats. And its latest tech should make it less straightforward to steal – for now, at least.

Gentile: I like the new Santa Fe, especially the styling. It’s bold, distinct and looks more like a Land Rover than a Hyundai.

Richardson: It’s definitely more boxy, but apparently the new design makes it more aerodynamic. I’d recommend it as something for Maureen to consider. What else has the passenger space she’s looking for, without being too large? The Mazda CX-70?

Gentile: That would work – it’s basically a two-row version of the CX-90.

Richardson: It’s almost exactly the same as the CX-90, but if you don’t need that third row, why pay for it and lug around the weight of those extra seats? I think it would fit the bill very well for Maureen. Plenty of space and relatively anonymous looks.

Gentile: It’s affordable, starting around $50,000, before taxes. And she can get it as a plug-in hybrid model, too. But that’ll cost more.

Richardson: I don’t think many stolen Mazdas are ending up in shipping containers. But whatever Maureen chooses, she should invest in a highly visible steering-wheel lock as a deterrent for when she parks overnight on the street.

Gentile: So what’s your final recommendation for Maureen?

Richardson: I think a conventionally powered Mazda CX-70 or new Hyundai Santa Fe will give her what she’s looking for.

Gentile: My pick is the new Santa Fe – good interior and cargo space, excellent head and leg room and beautiful styling that sets it ahead of the pack.

Maintaining your car’s battery is essential for ensuring smooth and reliable operation. A failing battery can prevent your car from starting and disrupt crucial electronics, including interior lights and security systems. For vehicles that aren’t driven frequently, it’s even more critical to keep your battery in excellent condition and to know which brands offer the best replacements.

AC Delco

With a rich history spanning over a century, AC Delco is celebrated for its dependable batteries, especially favored by GM vehicles. Their premium options, such as the S4 and S6 series, are recognized for their excellent performance and value. Although Bosch batteries might not be found at every retailer, they are accessible online and at Bosch service centers, and their four-year free replacement warranty is a notable feature.

Dakota

Specializing in Lithium technology, Dakota batteries offer an impressive warranty of up to 11 years. While they come at a higher price point, their reliability and extended lifespan justify the investment. Available primarily through online platforms like Amazon, Dakota batteries are a great choice if local options are limited.

Known for their affordability and multi-year warranties, these batteries are a practical choice if you need a replacement quickly. However, exploring other brands could be beneficial if you have access to them.

Interstate

Interstate batteries have been a well-regarded name in the industry since the 1950s. They offer competitive warranties, ranging from 18 to 48 months depending on the model. While their manufacturing sources can vary, Interstate batteries are known for their consistent performance and are worth considering if available in your area.

Motorcraft

Motorcraft batteries, manufactured by Clarios for Ford vehicles, offer a balanced combination of cost and performance. They come with a three-year free replacement warranty and are widely available at various retailers. Motorcraft is an excellent choice for those who prefer OEM batteries specifically designed for Ford models.

Odyssey

Although not as widely known, Odyssey batteries are praised for their exceptional reliability and extended shelf life. The Extreme series, in particular, offers a robust four-year full replacement warranty. They are available at major retailers like NAPA and Advance Auto Parts, making them a solid option for reliable power.

Optima

With over four decades of experience, Optima delivers high-performance batteries suitable for cars, trucks, and RVs. Their products, including the REDTOP and POWERSPORTS lines, are celebrated for their dependability and come with strong warranties. Despite their higher cost, Optima batteries are valued for their reliable power output.

As a relatively new player, XS Power has established itself with high-performance batteries designed for commercial and military use. Their AGM and Lithium batteries are known for their exceptional strength and durability. XS Power offers a one to three-year warranty along with a 60-day risk-free guarantee, reflecting their confidence in their products.

The brands listed here are recognized for their performance and offer various options to suit different needs. If you notice signs such as frequent jump-starts or a swollen battery, it’s a clear indication that a replacement is necessary.

Where to Buy and Dispose of Your Car Battery

Former Top Gear presenter warns ‘timing is everything’ as used car prices fall

The famous motoring personality Quentin Willson has warned used car buyers that now may not be the best time to buy a new vehicle, despite prices falling.

The former Top Gear presenter used to run a used car dealership and is well-known for offering expert advice that can help drivers get the best deal.

However, speaking exclusively to the Daily Express, Quentin noted that wider factors are making the used car market unstable.

He explained: “Used car buyers need to be careful. We know there’s a shortage of disposable income and private sales of all new cars are down 15 percent. While used car sales are reasonable, we don’t know what the next few months will hold.

“We could see spiking fuel costs because of instability in the Middle East, interest rates don’t look like they will be falling significantly soon, and consumer confidence is low with so much political uncertainty before an election. I don’t think this is a time to take any risks.”

Quentin noted that conflict in the Middle East could cause the price of petrol to increase in the coming months.

Whilst this will likely affect all owners of petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars, it could be bad news for those interested in buying a cheap luxury car, with many experts noting prices are particularly low at the moment.

The used car expert also stated that interest rates are still high due to inflation, meaning that drivers who finance their cars could end up paying more in the long run.

Nevertheless, Quentin suggested that drivers who need to buy a used car should be cautious, opting for a reliable and desirable model.

He advised: “If you do need to buy now then research prices, negotiate hard and only buy the best used car you can find. That means a desirable make and model, a good strong colour, petrol engine, low mileage and a continuous service history from new.

“High mileage, tired looking used cars always depreciate the most. Lots of asset classes (expect gold) have weakened over the last few months. I’d watch the market and world events carefully and wait to see if things start to recover. This is definitely a buyer’s market where timing is everything.”

According to the vehicle retail platform AutoTrader, the average price of a used car fell to £16,868 during January 2024, down 7.5 percent compared to 12 months earlier.

Nevertheless, whilst the prices decrease, demand for used cars is on the rise, with the company noting 85.5 million visits to the website by drivers looking to bag a bargain.

AutoTrader noted that many retailers are under-pricing models that are in high demand to reflect the current trends in wholesale values.

Car crashes into local business

A local business is working to recover after a car plowed through their front window Thursday morning.

“It sounded like an explosion in there,” said Andy Barriga a store salesman who witnessed the crash. “It took me a second to even register what happened.”

The crash took place at Alpine Home Medical around 10:30 a.m. on 25th and Channing Way in Idaho Falls. Employees inside the store were not beside the window at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported.

“I ran out along with a bystander to her vehicle,” Barriga said. “She was lethargic, didn’t know where she was, who she was. We turned the car off, got her keys from her, called the police.”

Idaho Falls Police responded to the accident and evaluated the driver. Determinations on what may have caused her to lose control of her vehicle have not yet been released.

After the car was towed away, employees resumed work as normal for the day. But, they are working to get the hole boarded up before renovations can be completed.

“We have appointments with patients this afternoon that we still have to do,” said Barriga. “So, we’ll do the best to accommodate them and not let them get injured in the in the mess.”

In addition to the storefront damage, some power lines to the building were severed during the accident. The cost of repairs is unknown at this time.

Good Samaritans recall saving driver moments before train crashed into car in Fairport

A 27-year-old driver’s life was saved Wednesday night, less than two minutes before a train slammed into his car.

Police said the driver’s GPS directed him to turn right onto Railroad Street from Main Street in Fairport. Instead, he mistakenly turned onto the railroad tracks and became stuck.

Two good Samaritans who raced to get the driver out of his car said they had roughly 40 seconds to save a life.

BACKGROUND: Car struck by train in Fairport; citizen aids driver’s escape

“As soon as we started talking, the railroad crossing started going down,” recalled Larry Johncox, one of the two bystanders who sprung into action. “We just had to get out of the way.”

While driving down Main Street in Fairport with his family, Johncox said he saw the whole incident unfold.

“I knew a train was going to be coming, but still, I just wanted to try helping him,” Johncox said. “I couldn’t lift it. It bothered me so much that I couldn’t help, but I tried flagging down another gentleman.”

That gentleman was volunteer firefighter Bill Evans.

“We know that we have about 3/4 of a mile between when the train activates that signal and when it’s going to be at our Main Street crossing, so know we’ve got no time,” Evans said.

“I was yelling, I was trying (to tell him) to get out, I was trying to lift the car, I was trying to do everything,” Johncox added.

Evans said the driver was in a state of shock, but he and Johncox eventually managed to convince him to leave his car.

“We’ve had that situation where people have panicked and not gotten out of their car, and it’s been tragic results,” Evans said.

All three men got off the tracks just moments before the train struck the car.

“It just took it down the track,” Johncox recalled. “It was so crazy.”

Evans estimates he’s responded to more than three dozen incidents on the train tracks over his 43 years of service.

“I was there for a reason,” Evans said. “I don’t know why our paths crossed for the right reason, and I’m blessed that I was there.”

Connor Johncox, Larry’s son, was taking cover in his family’s car during the incident. He briefly feared his father was still on the tracks at the moment of the impact.

“He is sort of a hero,” Connor said.

Police said neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to the crash.

J.R. Todd Eyes Victory in the Elite $250,000 PRO Superstar Shootout

High Stakes at the PRO Superstar Shootout

Twelve elite Funny Car drivers and teams will converge for a spectacular showdown, vying for the grand prize of $250,000 at the debut SCAG Power Equipment PRO Superstar Shootout, hosted by Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage. Among these, J.R. Todd, a seasoned world champion from Florida, is set to make a significant impact at the event scheduled for February 8-10 at Bradenton Motorsports Park.

The Prestige of Winning Among Champions

J.R. Todd, steering the DHL Toyota GR Supra for Kalitta Motorsports, recognizes the monumental opportunity that lies ahead. The event gathers a select group of the sport’s luminaries, including fellow world champions and seasoned contenders, all competing to etch their name as the inaugural winner of the PRO Superstar Shootout. Todd expressed the honor of competing with the elite, emphasizing the prestige of potentially becoming the first to clinch this exclusive event.

Unique Competition Dynamics

In a twist to traditional races, the invited drivers will have four chances to qualify for the elite eight-car elimination round, which disregards previous standings and introduces random pairings through a chip draw. This method ensures no strategic advantages based on qualifying positions, leveling the playing field among the top-tier competitors. Todd, undeterred by the unpredictability, plans to maintain his aggressive racing style, embracing the challenge posed by such a high-caliber field.

A New Chapter at a Familiar Venue

While Bradenton Motorsports Park is a venue where Todd has not competed before, it holds special memories, including where he earned his Super Comp license at age 16. Returning now to compete in a top-tier Funny Car event, with a substantial prize at stake, adds an exhilarating layer to his racing career. Winning here would not only be a personal triumph but also a historic moment in drag racing, setting a precedent for future competitions.

Racing with Teammates for High Rewards

Todd will not be alone in his quest for glory; he will be joined by Kalitta Motorsports teammates Doug Kalitta and Shawn Langdon, both past NHRA world champions in their own right. While they will compete in the Top Fuel category for the same hefty prize, Pro Stock racers will vie for a $125,000 award, underscoring the event’s high stakes across different classes.

2024 Guide to Managing Car Accident Claims in Riverside, CA

Legal Rights Exploration After a California Car Accident

Should you suffer injuries in a vehicle collision within California, you might consider seeking legal compensation. Understanding California’s specific traffic laws is crucial to ascertain if a valid case exists against another party. Engaging a reputable Riverside personal injury attorney could provide essential guidance through these legal proceedings.

Important Legal Timelines and Local Ordinances

The legal timeframe to initiate personal injury claims in California, including those for car accidents, is capped at two years by the statute of limitations. This period shortens to six months for claims against government entities. Early legal consultation is vital to adhere to these time limits, ensuring your claim proceeds.

Impact of California Driving Regulations on Liability

Mandatory insurance, child seat laws, and mobile phone restrictions are key regulations that affect liability in vehicular incidents in California. Familiarity with these rules is imperative, as their violation can significantly influence fault determination and compensation outcomes in accident claims.

Process of Establishing Fault and Claiming Damages

California’s system requires that the party at fault for the accident compensates the affected parties. If the responsible party’s insurance is inadequate or disputes arise, pursuing a lawsuit might become necessary. To establish negligence, you must demonstrate that the irresponsible actions of the other driver were the direct cause of your injuries, supported by comprehensive evidence like medical records.

Role of Comparative Negligence in Compensation

California’s comparative negligence rule allows for damage recovery even if you are partly at fault, reducing your compensation by your fault percentage. For example, if found 15% at fault, your compensation would be adjusted down by that percentage. Legal evaluation is crucial to maximize your recoverable damages under this rule.

Benefits of Consulting a Riverside Car Accident Lawyer

Consulting with a skilled personal injury lawyer immediately after an accident is crucial. An attorney will outline your legal options, handle insurer negotiations, and ensure you do not settle for less than your claim’s worth. Experienced lawyers in Riverside can fully assess the value of your claim and fight for your rights, ensuring optimal compensation.
