Authorities in Liberal, Kansas, are urgently searching for a 14-year-old girl, Marisheila Luis De La Cruz, who is believed to have been abducted by a man driving an SUV with Texas license plates. Marisheila was last seen at 6:45 p.m. at Mary Frame Park, wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and pink sandals. The suspect, described as a possible Hispanic male with black hair, was last seen wearing a black shirt and black pants.

Description of Suspect and Vehicle

The suspect was driving a black 2007 Chevy Tahoe with Texas license plate number TTJ8135. It is currently unclear whether they are still in the Liberal area or have moved elsewhere. Police are urging anyone with information about the vehicle or the incident to call 911 immediately to assist in the investigation and ensure Marisheila’s safe return.

Vienna Township assesses damage after SUV crashes into building

Half of the Vienna Township Hall is now closed after an SUV crashed into the building.

The vehicle crossed a busy Vienna Road, colliding with a tree, before becoming lodged inside the wall of the township offices. Two people were in the car at the time and taken to the hospital.

“There was quite a bit of cutting involved, I mean, in order to get it out,” said Township Supervisor Joseph A. Rizk. “It was lodged in a room. The firefighters had to use all their skills to do it. Thank god they are trained very well in our area.”

Rizk says only the bumper of the SUV was outside the building, causing extensive damage inside.

“The inside would be very insecure from a structural standpoint until those foundation walls are completely re-done,” said Rizk.

Rizk is waiting on an insurance adjustor to assess the damage. He estimates it would cost over half a million to fix, but believes it will be covered by insurance.

“Right now we are very confident that the insurance company will be covering this fully,” said Rizk. “There might be a slight deductible. It’s not something to be concerned about.”

There is also the issue of time. Rizk says the hole in the wall will take several months to fix.

In the meantime, they will have to share offices to accommodate the departments displaced by the crash.

“We do have the corridors blocked off,” said Rizk. “So, there’s no danger to either the occupants, our workers, and or the constituents that come in to receive any services they need.”

“There will be no interruption to services while the east side of the building is closed. All of those offices have been moved to the west wing of the township hall.

BMW Recalls Certain X5 xDrive40i SUVs for Incorrect Information on Tire Placard

The G05 rolled out in 2018 for the 2019 model year as the fourth-generation X5. No fewer than 72,573 units were sold in the United States last year, making it BMW’s most popular nameplate in this part of the world. Proudly assembled in South Carolina, the mid-size utility vehicle has been recently hit with a recall over an honest mistake.

BMW of North America informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a number of X5 xDrive40i vehicles produced for the 2024 and 2025 model years may feature incorrect information on the tire placard. What kind of incorrect information? Think tire size and pressure, which is the recipe for a blowout at high speeds.

An employee noticed this problem on April 30, prompting a full-on investigation at BMW Plant Spartanburg. The subsequent reviews indicated that information for certain tires within the data system was inappropriately used for certain vehicles. More specifically, 703 units of the BMW X5 xDrive40i.

Fortunately, the automaker isn’t aware of any field reports or customer complaints related to the described concern. Dealers have already been instructed to replace the iffy placard with one containing the correct tire dimensions and inflation pressure. BMW further highlights that said utility vehicles do not conform to FMVSS number 110.

Owner notification letters, meanwhile, will have to wait until July 2. In the meantime, owners can verify whether their SUVs are included in this recall by running the 17-character vehicle identification number on BMW’s recall portal. Alternatively, the NHTSA‘s website also boasts a VIN look-up tool.

Affected vehicles were produced in the period between March 29, 2023 and April 29, 2024. Also worthy of note, said vehicles feature VINs beginning with 5, which stands for made in the USA. Every single version of the X5 is assembled stateside, with said versions ranging from the inline-six sDrive40i to the V8-powered M Competition.

The X5’s direct competitor from Mercedes-Benz, by comparison, relies on a four-cylinder turbo as the standard powerplant rather than a turbo sixer. On the other hand, the GLE 350 4MATIC SUV starts at $62,650 versus $68,000 for the X5 xDrive40i.

BMW lists the rear-drive sDrive40i and all-wheel-drive xDrive40i with the very same 0-60 acceleration estimate of 5.3 seconds. The B58 single-turbo sixer hiding underhood is good for 375 horsepower and 398 pound-feet (540 Nm) of torque between 1,850 and 5,000 revolutions per minute.

That kind of torque and that kind of peak torque band make a world of difference in a heavy vehicle such as the X5. The same cannot be said about the base GLE, which makes do with 255 ponies and 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) from 1,800 to 4,000 rpm. And not surprising in the least, the GLE sells worse than its Bavarian rival, with Mercedes-Benz reporting 57,696 deliveries in the US of A last year.

Pennsylvania drivers are about to get a nasty wake up call when they use their phones behind the wheel.

Distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic among motorists. For some drivers, catching up on the latest TikTok video, text, or mobile game is more important than paying attention to the road. To combat its safety concerns, the State of Pennsylvania is banning all handling of cell phones. And the Keystone State isn’t the only one.

Anytime a driver prioritizes their smartphone screen over the road in front of them, they’re putting themselves and others at risk. After all, a 4,000-lb SUV is a weapon in the wrong hands. To lessen the tide of injuries, deaths, and property damage caused by cell phone use behind the wheel, many states have a zero-tolerance policy regarding texting and driving. And Pennsylvania is the latest state to join the safety initiative.

According to WJAC 6, the State of Pennsylvania is banning cell phone use while driving. The verbiage covers “handling a cell phone,” meaning motorists should still be able to use hands-free technology or integrated infotainment systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to place calls or use voice commands.

Governor Josh Shapiro’s staff confirmed that he would sign the bill soon. Moreover, the news comes 18 years after Governor Shapiro proposed similar legislation. The law will take effect one year from its signing.

Of course, Pennsylvania is far from the only state to impose such a measure. 28 states have some sort of ban on handling a cell phone while driving, from fielding a call with one hand to drafting text messages.

It’s a good idea, too. According to the Insurance Journal, distracted driving accounted for a greater number of crashes than alcohol use and tailgating. As such, distracting driving and dangerous cell phone use while driving are easy targets for lawmakers. It’s a tragedy that we need laws governing common sense.

National Park Service Asks for Help After Someone Mangled a Historic Landmark Winching Their Car

This happened away from the legal road, where deep mud can lurk.

The National Park Service (NPS) is requesting assistance with finding out who damaged a historic salt tram tower in Death Valley National Park. The 113-year-old tower came down between April 1 and April 24, NPS says. It suspects this happened when someone used it to winch their vehicle out of deep mud.

The Saline Valley Salt Tram has a rich history dating back to 1911. The Saline Valley Salt Company constructed it. The 13-mile tramway was an engineering marvel designed to transport salt from Saline Valley to Owens Valley. It climbs over 7,000 vertical feet, with some sections having steep vertical grades up to 40 degrees.

Due to its age, length, steepness, and notable surrounding landscape, the Saline Valley Salt Tram is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As such, it’s considered nationally significant.

Most of the tramway is on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. However, the first four towers are within Death Valley National Park. The damaged tower, known as Tower #1, is the closest to the Saline Valley lakebed.

The damage may have occurred weeks before being discovered

Park rangers discovered nearby vehicle tracks leading off the legal road into the mud. It appears the tower was used as an anchor to free the stuck vehicle, causing it to topple over and rip its concrete footings out of the ground.

Before this incident, the NPS had plans for a salt tram stabilization project funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. It is yet to be determined if the funds can be used to fix this specific damage to Tower #1.
