Are EV Startups in Trouble? 1 Company Is Unlikely to Survive the Year

Last year, EV automakers couldn’t get anything wrong, but that success hasn’t transitioned to 2024. Automakers focused solely on electric vehicles had a rough first quarter, meaning four top names, Tesla, Lucid, Fisker, and Rivian, have to address challenges to turn things around. How are these EV startups addressing serious challenges? Let’s find out.

Let’s start with Tesla

It seems that Tesla sets the tone for the electric vehicle world, which makes this brand a good place to start. Tesla is the oldest of these EV startups and chose to lay off workers to address the first quarter losses. Unfortunately, firing the entire charging team wasn’t the smartest move, and Tesla has since begun rehiring them. The layoffs impacted other areas of Tesla, including engineering, service, and software groups. Cutting staff can be a double-edged sword, but it’s the direction Tesla CEO Elon Musk chose.

How is Lucid addressing its losses?

Lucid is a boutique-style EV startup, producing vehicles in small numbers. Lucid’s goal to build 9,000 cars this year might be in jeopardy after losing $685 million during the first quarter. This figure is better than the Q1 2023 losses of $780 million, and revenue is up to $173 million. Lucid intends to throw money at the problem and has $2.2 billion in cash to offset losses and continue forward.

Is Fisker done?

Fisker needs the EV market to be strong to survive. Currently, they only build the Ocean SUV, which might mean Fisker’s end. As one of the newest EV startups, this company was only just getting started when things slammed shut. The company could suffer $75 million in losses, which might be enough to cancel the contract with Magna International of Australia, which currently produces the Fisker Ocean. No more Ocean SUVs will be built, and Fisker doesn’t have another location to build them. Without a fiscal shot in the arm, Fisker may need to declare bankruptcy.

2024 Rivian R1T | Rivian

Rivian throws money at the problem

Rivian faced challenges last year and could be in a good position this year. Revenue is up $661 million, and deliveries are up 71% during the first quarter to 13,588 vehicles. With the new Rivian R2 on the horizon and potential partnerships with commercial companies, Rivian might be in a good position if its cash reserves remain. This company lost $5.4 billion in 2023 and another $1.45 billion during Q1 2024. The cash burn continues but might turn around for Rivian soon.

Will all four of these EV startups survive into the future? It doesn’t look like it, but three of them should remain for at least another year.

Rivian R1S and R1T to Feature YouTube App and Google Cast for Enhanced In-Car Entertainment

Introduction of New Features

Rivian is set to enhance the in-car experience for its flagship electric vehicles, the R1S and R1T, by integrating a YouTube app and Google Cast functionality. This move transforms these adventure-ready EVs into mobile entertainment hubs, allowing users to enjoy a range of video content while parked. The update marks a significant upgrade from the previous music-only streaming options available in these vehicles.

Bringing Streaming to Adventure EVs

Initially launched as premium adventure EVs, the Rivian R1S and R1T have been popular for their performance and off-road capabilities. However, unlike competitors like Tesla, Rivian’s models lacked integrated video entertainment features. Rivian owners were limited to music streaming from services like Spotify and Amazon Music, without any built-in video options. This is set to change with the new update, which will introduce native YouTube access and the ability to cast videos from smartphones directly to the vehicle’s 15-inch infotainment screen.

How the New Features Work

The upcoming software update will enable R1S and R1T owners to use the YouTube app independently or cast content from their smartphones. To use the casting feature, the device must be connected to the car’s Wi-Fi hotspot. Once connected, users can stream videos from Google Cast-compatible apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and HBO Max. It’s important to note that video playback will only function while the vehicle is parked, ensuring safety when the car is in motion.

Enhanced User Experience

This integration of YouTube and Google Cast in Rivian’s vehicles not only meets the entertainment needs of users but also brings Rivian’s in-car tech in line with other leading EV manufacturers. The convenience of streaming various content directly in the car enhances the overall user experience, particularly during long waits or charging sessions. Rivian’s commitment to continuous improvement and user satisfaction is evident in this latest update, promising more engaging and enjoyable journeys for its customers.

By offering these new features, Rivian ensures that its flagship models, the R1S and R1T, provide a more complete and versatile driving experience, blending adventure with modern conveniences.

All Rivians Under The $80,000 Price Cap Qualify For $3,750 Federal Tax Credit

When leasing, the incentive jumps to $7,500.

The 2024 Rivian R1S and Rivian R1T are now listed by the IRS as eligible for the $3,750 federal tax credit.

We already knew that the R1S and R1T with Large and Max battery packs qualified for half of the maximum incentive ($7,500) but official confirmation about the all-new Standard and Standard+ battery packs was missing.

Rivian expands its EV lineup

Rivian currently offers two models: the R1S seven-seat SUV and the R1T pickup, both in multiple versions. In the coming years, the lineup will be expanded by smaller and more affordable R2 and R3 models.

As we can see on the fueleconomy.gov website, all Rivian R1S and R1T versions, under the $80,000 price cap, qualify for the $3,750 incentive.

Top Videos:

The list includes five R1S versions (Dual Standard, Dual Standard+, Perf. Dual Standard+, Dual Large and Quad Large) and seven R1T versions (Dual Standard, Dual Standard+, Perf. Dual Standard+, Dual Large , Perf. Dual Large, Dual Max and Quad Large). A few types are missing, but their MSRPs are above $80,000.

rivian-r1s-r1t-3750-federal-tax-credit

All Rivian R1S and R1T under an MSRP of $80,000 are qualified for the incentive when purchasing. Specifically, the new more affordable battery versions: Standard and Standard+.

The $3,750 incentive means that Rivian meets only one out of two battery-related requirements. Meeting both (for critical minerals and battery components) would allow it to secure the full amount of $7,500. However, the full amount might be available through leasing since battery-related requirements are not present when leasing.

Below, we listed all Rivian EV configurations (mostly Standard and Standard+) that qualify for the $3,750 federal tax credit, including powertrain, battery and wheel options:

Rivian Teases Upcoming R2 Electric SUV Ahead Of March 7 Debut

Electric car manufacturer Rivian has teased its upcoming new electric SUV, the R2 ahead of its debut on March 7, 2024. Set to compete with the popular Tesla Model Y in global markets, the electric SUV will sit under the R1 series and, based on the teaser, will share some design elements with the R1S.

The teaser video only provides a brief glimpse of the SUV’s light cluster which retains the full-width light bar and distinct ‘pill’ lights seen on its larger siblings. The carmaker had previously showcased a covered clay model of the proposed R2 last year on Instagram which hinted at the smaller SUV retaining the upright looks from its siblings.

It however remains to be seen if the new R2 will be offered in a pick-up truck derivative similar to the R1T.

As per reports, the R2 is set to be based on a different platform as compared to the R1S and R1T and is also likely to feature new in-house-developed electric motors. The model will also reportedly roll out of a different factory from the larger R1s.

Set to be constructed in Georgia, USA, construction on the new plant is reported to commence this year with the new R2 only expected to enter production sometime in 2026.

Rivian R1S Now Available for Lease with Full $7,500 Tax Credit

Rivian Expands Leasing Options to Include R1S SUV

Following the success of the R1T pickup’s leasing program, Rivian has now announced that the all-electric R1S SUV can also be leased. This development allows customers to take advantage of the full $7,500 tax credit, which isn’t available for outright purchases (though some Rivian models do qualify for a $3,750 tax credit when bought).

Rivian’s leasing program, which started with the R1T at the end of last year, now includes the R1S SUV. Leasing starts at approximately $1,000 per month, with an upfront payment of around $9,000 and a $1,000 deposit upon ordering.

Leasing Details and Availability

Customers can now lease the Rivian R1S, benefiting from the $7,500 tax credit. The best offer found in the New York area includes a ready-made R1S Quad-Motor with the large battery pack, Adventure Package, 21-inch road wheels, Glacier White exterior, and Black Mountain/Dark Ash Wood interior. This 835-horsepower vehicle accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds and offers an EPA-estimated range of 321 miles on a full charge.

After the initial $1,000 deposit and $8,951 due at signing, the monthly payment is $1,056 for a 36-month lease with an annual mileage limit of 10,000 miles. The vehicle’s total value is $93,750.

Rivian’s website also lists several inventory R1S models with the dual-motor powertrain available for leasing. Custom-built SUVs aren’t eligible for leasing but Rivian offers financing options with terms ranging from 48 to 84 months. The R1T pickup, Rivian’s first model to benefit from leasing, follows the same financing structure.

Impact and Availability

The R1S was Rivian’s top-selling model last year, and the introduction of leasing for inventory units is expected to boost sales further as the company aims to increase production and delivery. The leasing program is currently available in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MA, MI, MO, NJ, NY, NV, PA, TX, and WA.

In 2023, Rivian sold 24,783 R1S vehicles in the U.S., making it the seventh-best-selling EV in the country. The R1T saw 17,727 sales last year, indicating a growing preference for the SUV among Rivian’s customers.

For more details on the leasing options and to see available inventory, visit Rivian’s website.

Rivian Introduces Leasing Program For R1S Electric SUV

Rivian notes that for customers to get a $940 monthly payment, the vehicle price (before dealer options) must be $102,800, made up of the Dual Motor Performance AWD configuration, Max battery pack, 21-inch wheels, and premium interior, wheel, and paint options.

$7,835 is due at signing, comprising a $6,000 capitalized cost reduction, a $940 first monthly payment, and a $895 acquisition fee. There’s a $0 security deposit, but Rivian notes not all customers will qualify for this waiver.

Leasing is only available for select configurations. All interested customers must do is input their zip codes to find eligible lease vehicles in their area. We looked in several states and found that a leased R1S can be delivered in one to two weeks, with monthly payments varying from around $1,070 to $1,260.

It’s worth noting that a Tesla Model X (offering seven seats) will cost around $1,324 a month with similar leasing terms.

Rivian Revs Up Options: Now Lease R1S SUV Alongside R1T Truck

EV manufacturer Rivian Automotive Inc RIVN has expanded its leasing options to include the R1S SUV, alongside its R1T electric truck.

What Happened: Rivian announced the availability of leasing for the R1S in a post on Wednesday. Leasing for Rivian’s vehicles initially began with the R1T truck in November and has now been extended to include the SUV model.

The R1S electric SUV can be leased for 36 months at approximately $1,169 per month. However, leasing is currently limited to specific states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington.

Both the R1S and R1T are premium electric vehicles, and the introduction of leasing options can enhance their appeal to consumers. The all-electric R1T truck has a starting purchase price of $73,000, while the R1S SUV starts at $78,000.

Upfront Costs: Upon signing the lease, customers are required to pay an amount that includes a $7,000 down payment, the first monthly payment, an $895 acquisition fee, and potentially a security deposit (not applicable to all customers, according to Rivian). Additional charges for tax, title, license, and registration fees will also apply.

Rivian R1S EPA Range And Pricing Overview Including 400-Mile Max Pack

The Rivian R1S MSRP prices vary from $78,000 to $102,600, while the EPA range varies from about 260 miles to 400 miles.

The Rivian R1S seven-seat SUV is quickly becoming one of the best-selling all-electric models in the United States with close to 20,000 sold during the first 10 months of the year.

It has one of the broadest choices of versions available, including three battery packs (Standard, Large, and Max) and three powertrain options (Dual, Performance Dual, and Quad), plus a few wheel sizes (20-, 21- and 22-inch). With the recent announcement of the pricing and range for the latest R1S with the Max Pack battery, today we will check out the entire lineup of the 17 available configurations. Aside from the Maxi Pack, the pricing and specs of the other R1S are basically the same as reported in May.

The all-new, 149-kilowatt-hour Max Pack battery (14 kWh bigger than the Large Pack) available on the Rivian R1S with Dual Motor (DM) powertrains makes the R1S the first and only seven-seat electric SUV with 400 miles of EPA Combined range. For reference, the Kia EV9 (7 seats) is rated at up to 280 miles, while the Tesla Model X is up to 348 miles, but both of them are also equipped with much smaller batteries—respectively 99.8-kWh or about 100-kWh (Tesla does not reveal the exact number).

The Rivian R1S DM/Performance DM Max Pack with standard 21-inch wheels has an EPA Combined range of 400 miles, but the switch to bigger 22-inch wheels reduces it by 20 miles or 5% to 380 miles. Meanwhile, the 20-inch wheels with all-terrain (AT) tires return 355 miles (which is 45 miles or over 11% less).

Compared to the Large Pack battery (135 kWh), which is also $10,000 less expensive, the range is noticeably higher:

  • R1S Max Pack (AT 20-inch): 355 miles (up 48 miles or 15.6%)
  • R1S Max Pack (21-inch): 400 miles (up 48 miles or 13.6%)
  • R1S Max Pack (22-inch): 380 miles (up 39 miles or 11.4%)

* EPA-estimated range according to Rivian (not listed by EPA yet); 105 kWh, 135 kWh battery pack capacity according to previous reports, 149 kWh confirmed by Rivian; acceleration depends on the exact configuration; all Rivian R1Ss can tow up to 7,700 lbs

** Expected range of the Standard Pack battery, according to Rivian (no EPA-estimated numbers yet)

*** We assigned all configurations to the 2023 model year, although some might slip into the 2024 model year.

Here is a better look at the EPA-estimated range results (or expected, in the case of the Standard Pack battery) of all 17 versions, plus one additional Quad Motor Large Pack version with 20-inch wheels, which has an EPA rating (289 miles), but is not available:

external_image

The 400-mile range is a tempting option, but at the same time, the difference of up to 48 miles compared to the Large Pack is not that much.

It would be interesting to see what the range of the originally expected 180-kWh Max Pack would be. Simple math indicates that the range would be 20% higher (compared to 149 kWh), so up to roughly 480 miles and this would be extraordinary. We assume that weight and costs were the biggest concerns that prompted the company to offer the 149 kWh battery instead of a 180 kWh one.

Pricing

The base Rivian R1S DM Standard Pack, with standard 21-inch wheels, is priced at $78,000 (plus a $1,800 destination charge, the same for all configurations).

The Large Pack option costs $6,000, while the Max Pack option is $16,000 more, which means that the Rivian R1S DM Large Pack starts at $84,000, while the Rivian R1S DM Max Pack starts at $94,000.

The Performance Dual Motor option costs $5,000 more, but it can’t be combined with the Standard Pack battery. The R1S Perf. DM Large Pack starts at $89,000, while Rivian R1S Perf. DM Max Pack starts at $99,000.

Rivian’s Exclusive Offer: Free Wall Charger and $2,000 Installation Credit with R1T Purchase

Limited-Time Offer for Rivian R1T Buyers

Rivian is enhancing its appeal for customers interested in its R1T pickup truck by offering a complimentary Level 2 wall charger along with a $2,000 installation credit. This promotion, which is available only for vehicles from inventory and through Rivian’s installation partner Qmerit, is valid until the end of the year. The fast delivery of inventory vehicles—typically within one to six weeks—makes this an attractive alternative to the custom build wait time of about four months.

Exceptional Value and Convenience

The free wall charger, valued at $800, supports fast charging with up to 11.5 kilowatts and a 24-foot cable, providing up to 25 miles of range per hour for the R1T. With the $2,000 installation credit, Rivian significantly reduces the initial setup cost, though any additional expenses beyond this credit will be the owner’s responsibility. This package, totaling approximately $2,800, offers substantial savings and convenience, similar to Hyundai’s earlier offer but with greater value for Rivian customers.

Amazon Doubles Its Rivian Electric Delivery Vehicle Fleet to 10,000: A Major Milestone in Green Logistics

Amazon’s Fleet Expansion Milestone

Amazon has reached a significant milestone by increasing its fleet of Rivian Electric Delivery Vehicles (EDVs) to over 10,000 units, marking a doubling in size from just four months ago. This rapid expansion reflects a notable increase in production capacity at Rivian’s plant in Normal, Illinois. Previously, Amazon had announced reaching 5,000 EDVs on U.S. roads in July 2023, highlighting the swift progress since the initial rollout.

The Growing Impact of Rivian EDVs

Rivian has achieved a record production of 16,304 electric vehicles, including the R1S, R1T, and EDV models, in the third quarter of 2023 at its Illinois factory. With this growth, Amazon’s fleet now represents 10 percent of its 100,000-vehicle commitment made in 2019, despite missing the initial 2022 delivery target. The electric vans have significantly impacted operations, delivering over 260 million packages across 1,800 U.S. cities since their introduction in July 2022.

Advancements in Charging Infrastructure

To support this expanding fleet, Amazon is enhancing its charging infrastructure, having installed over 12,000 chargers across more than 100 delivery stations. The company’s commitment extends globally, with Rivian EDVs now being deployed in Germany, starting with 500 units added in July 2023. By 2030, Amazon aims to leverage its 100,000 electric vans to drastically cut carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future.
